Генезис биографического жанра в европейской традиции восходит к «Сравнительным жизнеописаниям» Плутарха, «Агриколе» Тацита, «Жизни двенадцати цезарей» Светония и другим памятникам античной культуры. Благодаря этим образцовым биографиям этот жанр в английской литературе занял особое место, его принято обозначать как non-fiction, однако на европейскую традицию влияние оказали не биографии, написанные Боссуэлом и Стречи.
