Abstract

Purpose: Physical activity is associated with lower cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. However, the effects of combined exercise on arterial stiffness are currently unclear in the peripheral arteries of the elderly. Our objectives are to investigate the effect of a combined exercise program for 12 weeks on muscle strength and peripheral arterial stiffness in obese elderly women.BR Method: Obese elderly women were divided into two groups: Con (control group), Ex (Exercise group). The exercise group performed a combined exercise program of 60 mins/day, 3 days/week for 12 weeks. Body composition and blood pressure were measured. Muscle strength was measured by grip strength dynamometer. Arterial stiffness was measured by heart-finger pulse wave velocity (hfPWV), heart-ankle pulse wave velocity (haPWV), and brachial-finger pulse wave velocity (bfPWV) before and after 12 weeks.BR Results: Combined exercise did not affect body composition and blood pressure. However, muscle strength in the combined exercise group significantly improved compared to the control group (p.05). hf-PWV and haPWV did not change, but bfPWV significantly improved compared to the control group (p.05).BR Conclusion: These results suggest that a combined exercise program may improve vascular function through the reduction of bfPWV and enhancement of muscle strength in obese elderly women.
