Abstract

The article is devoted to analyzing footballers’ zoomorphous nicknames used in the German mass media. The author identifies the similarity of footballers’ nicknames with the nicknames of other social professional communities. The nicknames are classified according to an animal type. The paper discovers the peculiarities of zoomorphous nicknames and differentiates between zoomorphous nicknames proper and formally zoomorphous nicknames. The author establishes the loss of negative connotation of some nicknames and emphasizes the importance of studying footballers’ nicknames for understanding the peculiarities of sports community.
