Abstract

THE C YRILLOMETHODIAN TRADITION IN THE SLAVIC WORLD The Eastern Roman Empire made a huge effort for the spiritual and cultural approach of the Slavic world that stretched north of its border in the 9th century AD. Two brothers from Thessaloniki, Constantine – Cyril and Methodius, started this effort and their work, in which the cultural and ecclesiastical tradition of the Christian East is clearly reflected, set the conditions for the diplomatic approach of the Slavic world to the Empire of New Rome. We are going to attempt a theological assessment of the cultural and spiritual approach of the Slavic world to the Empire of New Rome, which began with the work of the Thessalonians brothers on which it was mainly founded. Their work had two critical axes for the approach of the Slavic world, which are especially presented here. These two axes concern the consolidation of the ecclesiastical tradition of the Christian East through the dissemination of its worship and its hagiographic and patristic tradition on one hand, and the prevalence of the tradition of the law of Constantinople on the other. These two axes could ensure the creation of institutions and structures similar to those of the Empire in the Slavic world. All these would ensure not only the approach but also the connection of the Slavic peoples with the Empire of New Rome through indissoluble and indestructible bonds.
