Abstract

The aim of the research is to identify the sources of the emergence of English phraseological units that owe their origin and formation to the XX century. The paper proposes a classification of phraseological units (hereinafter referred to as PE) from the viewpoint of the subject areas that served as the starting point for the formation of these units (socio-political sphere, military terminology, media and mass media industry, literature and art, sports). Scientific novelty of the research lies in distinguishing phraseological units depending on the “starting points” of their formation in the XX century and also in determining the linguistic sources of the specified phraseological units (their attribution to native English phraseological units, intra- or interlanguage borrowings). The research findings indicate that the leading factors in the emergence of phraseological units in the last century were socio-political and military events, as well as that the predominant part of the phraseological units formed belongs to the native English type.
