Abstract

The article provides the facts of the biography of the prominent Russian pedagogue of the second half of the XIX and the first two decades of the XX century Vasiliy Porfiryevich Vakhterov (1853-1924). His main pedagogical views are revealed, especially in the field of general pedagogy. A connection is established between V. P. Vakhterov’s ideas and progressive Russian pedagogy of his time as well as modern Russian pedagogy. The analysis of a number of pedagogical works by V. P. Vakhterov is carried out. The author characterizes the active progressive social and educational activity of V. P. Vakhterov aimed at implementing the idea of universal primary education in Russia.
