Abstract
This study intends to examine the use patterns and changes in uses of verbs by investigating past tenses used in four bibles written in Church Slavic language, Gennadius-Bible, Ostrog-Bible, Moscow-Bible and Elizabeth-Bible that were all published in the East Slavs. To do so, two approaches were used. First, with the comparative perspectives from the Byzantine text, this study examined the usage of aorist, imperfect, perfect, and pluperfect tenses used in Church Slavic texts and checked establishment patterns. Second, based on the relationship between the four bibles, this study examined change patterns of the verb past tense in Church Slavic. As such, this study confirmed the uses of verb past tenses established in the Gospels as a source language, as a target language with Greek through the relationship with Church Slavic language. And based on this, it was possible to confirm the establishment process of past tenses rooted in the foundation of East Slav’s Church Slavic language through the changes between aorist and imperfect tenses and between aorist and perfect tenses. As for the motif behind this change, Greek roots as an external factor and interactions with Church Slavic standards as an internal factor could be considered. Therefore, this study has its significance as it initiated the study in the development and directions of verb past tenses in Church Slavic language through the history of bible publications.
