Abstract

The authors of the article focus on the problem of modern Ukrainian ono-mastics in studying of printed, handwritten, and oral sources, covering the issues of the emergence and existence of proper names, in particular anthroponyms and their development at diff erent stages of the evolution of Ukrainian society. Emphasis is made on the need to clarify, supplement known defi nitions, and systematize authentic folk surnames that fi nd their local manifestations in the cultural tradition of the Podillia region. It is noted that the study of the anthropo-nyms of Kamianets-Podilskyi region is not accidental, because their comprehen-sive study and interpretation has not taken place yet. Attention is focused on the general characteristics of the anthroponymicon of the settlements of Bahovytsa, Tarasivka, Ustia, Velyka Slobidka, Mala Slobidka, Tsviklivtsi Druhi, Shutnivtsi Kamianets-Podilskyi district, Khmelnytskyi region. The importance of conducting onomastic fi eld expeditions to settlements of the Podillia region, as well as their intensifi cation, is emphasized. A peculiar cluster research method was used, implemented by the employees of the edu-cational and scientifi c laboratory of ethnology of the Educational and Scientifi c Institute of Ukrainian Philology and Journalism of Kamianets-Podilskyi Ivan Ohiienko National University, when a settlement Tarasivka was chosen as the object of dislocation for extensive and staged collection, recording and research work directly on the fi eld, testifi ed to the productivity of searches and gave the opportunity to cover nearby villages with fruitful anthroponymic work.We believe that the carried out work can help the inhabitants of the stud-ied villages and not only learn more about their own surnames, but also start researching their family tree. The considered surnames are interesting lexical and ethnographic material, which is advisable to use when studying the history of the village, the life of its inhabitants, their traditions and customs, and most importantly – linguistic peculiarities.
