Abstract

The recent trend of festivals in Korea is characterized by the steady evolvement from watching to visitor‐centered activities of touching, feeling, and experiencing. Most of festival visitors have been found to visit festivals in order to educate their children, to have new experiences, or to improve human relationships. Experience programs in festivals have educational effects for children’s physical growth and personality development, and they also reflect the characteristics of the festivals. For these reasons, it is necessary to actively utilize experience programs reflecting the characteristics of the festivals on the spot. Assuming that children’s emotional response to festival experience programs would be highly valuable, this study aimed to analyze how elementary school children’s emotional responses affected their social development. According to the results of this study, the most noticeable positive effect of children’s emotional response to festival experience programs was the enhancement of their perspective taking ability, which is the ability to get out of one’s own perspective and to understand and accept others’ positions, and this effect promoted their social development. This finding means that festivals can be very useful education programs based on field experiences for children’s social development. This also suggests that we need to recognize festival experience programs as valuable resources of children’s education and to develop new creative ideas and various experience programs continuously.
