Abstract

The work is aimed at studying the issue of the need to introduce the course “Information Culture” into the curriculum of the main educational program — in that part of it, which is formed by the participants in educational relations. The course is the result of a project to form the information culture of schoolchildren in grades 5–9. The project has been implemented since 2019. The results of surveys of students and their parents are presented. The results show what basic skills of working with information, information processes students in grades 5 and 7 owned before the project was implemented. And also, what are the interim results obtained during the past three years. The organizational and technical conditions necessary for inrtoducing this course are considered. Data are given that indicate the need to carry out activities aimed at the formation of an information culture in the school — starting at least from the fifth grade. The problems that arise on the way to the implementation of a school project on the formation of a student’s information culture are considered. Much attention is paid to technological factors. contributing to the process of information culture formation. The terminological features of the concepts of “information culture”, “information literacy” are considered and arguments are given in favor of the need to introduce the course “Information culture”, and not “Information literacy”, “Technical literacy” or “Functional literacy”.
