Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of rejection sensitivity and self-si-lence on the relationship between internalized shame and depression in high school students.
Methods The research subjects of this study are Korean high school students, and an online survey was con-ducted from June 20 to June 30, 2023, and a total of 350 surveys were collected, and all of the collected surveys were used for statistical analysis. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 and Amos 23.0 programs.
Results The findings of the present study were as follows First, rejection sensitivity partially mediated the rela-tionship between internalized shame and depression. Second, self-silence partially mediated the relationship be-tween internalized shame and depression. Third, rejection sensitivity and self-silence sequentially mediated the relationship between internalized shame and depression. Based on these findings, we discuss the significance and limitations of this study and suggest research questions for future research.
Conclusions The conclusion of this study is that people with high internalized shame develop rejection sensitivity because they deny themselves and are sensitive to the evaluation of others, which leads to self-denial and self-silencing to avoid expressing opinions, which is associated with depression.
