Abstract

Most people recognize that “Hunminjeongeum = Hangeul”, but “Hunminjeongeum” and “Hangeul” were created in a different way of thinking in a completely different historical background and represent each era. If “Hunminjeongeum” had been invented based on Neo-Confucian values in the Middle Ages, “Hangeul” was a character that was developed as “Korean Letter” by nationalistic values in the modern period. In other words, the 28 letters of “Hunminjeongeum” are a symbolic system designed to embody all the natural sounds and verbal pronunciations of the world, and the 24 letters of “Hanguel” are phoneme characters set to contain only Korean language to solidify the modern state system. Even though they were introduced with different background and thought, as an icon each of them has performed the function faithfully.BR We should prepare for the future of Hangeul through examining Hunminjeongeum of the Middle Ages and Hangeul of the modern era.
