Abstract
The study aims to analyse music genre preferences among students of different ages and genders. Scientific novelty lies in the fact that the researcher has identified relationship between gender, age, on the one hand, and the preferred musical style, on the other. As a result, among eight detected functions performed by music, three are dominant: emotional, social and cognitive. Among the studied genres, rock music has the most numerous and strong correlations with the functions of music. 1st-year students are more likely (p ≤ 0.05) to listen to rap and pop music compared to 4th-year students. As for other genres, there were found no significant differences. For young women, musical compositions are more often associated with some memories, while for young men music is entertaining or motivational in nature.
