Abstract

The paper considers reception of folk drama in L. N. Tolstoy’s creative work. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the researcher analyzes prosaic, pedagogical and esthetical works, letters, diaries of L. N. Tolstoy and his fellow writers, describes folk drama versions L. N. Tolstoy was familiar with. The findings indicate that the artist did not assimilate aesthetics and poetics of folk drama; his creative process unfolded according to the following algorithm: observation on a subject (the 1860-1870s) - taking it as a reference point (the 1880s) - creating his own model that differs significantly from the original version (the 1890-1900s).
