Abstract

Objectives This study aimed to explore the mediating effect of self-esteem and major satisfaction on the relationship between positive psychological capital and career identification among first year nursing students.
Methods Data were collected through questionnaires administered to 165 first year nursing students belonging to three universities located in G city and J province, from June 20 to July 4, 2022. The SPSS/23.0 program was used to analyze the data with descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, multiple regression, and a Sobel test.
Results The career identification was significantly correlated with positive psychological capital(r=.41, p<.001), Self-esteem(r=.45, p<.001), and major satisfaction(r=.49, p<.001). Self-esteem(z=3.42, p<.001) and major satisfaction(z=5.75, p<.001) mediated the relationship between positive psychological capital and career identification. Among the general characteristics, career identity showed significant differences in age and motivation to apply for the nursing department.
Conclusions Therefore, in order to improve the career identity of first year nursing students, who will become nurses in the future, it is necessary to improve positive psychological capital, build self-esteem, and increase major satisfaction.
