Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between major selection motivation, major satisfaction, and career identity of students of dental laboratory technology, and to identify the relationship between these variables, and to understand the effect on major satisfaction and career identity.
 Methods From August 29 to September 30, 2022, the survey was conducted on 120 male and female students of dental laboratory technology in the Jeonbuk region. The collected data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistic ver. 22.0 statistical program. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, 1-Way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were performed to analyze the data.
 Results The average score for major selection motivation was 3.07, major satisfaction was 3.71, and career identity was the lowest at 2.81. As for the sub-factor of major selection motivation, extrinsic motivation(3.19) was higher than intrinsic motivation(3.01), and the sub-factors of major satisfaction were relationship satisfaction(3.97), subject satisfaction(3.92), and general satisfaction(3.57). cognitive satisfaction(3.43), in order. Major selection motivation showed a significant difference according to the grade(p<.05) and person who influenced the choice of department(p<.05), and major satisfaction showed a significant difference according to gender(p<.01). There was a significant positive(+) correlation between major selection motivation and major satisfaction(r=.445, p<.001), and major selection motivation and career identity(r=.227, p<.05), respectively. Intrinsic motivation(β=.043, p<.001), a sub-factor of major selection motivation, have a 19.5%(Adj R2=.195) explanatory power for major satisfaction.
 Conclusions It is necessary to establish a positive impression of the profession by providing students with accurate information about dental technicians. In addition, since intrinsic major selection motivation affects major satisfaction, efforts are needed to increase the intrinsic motivation of high school students who are the parties to major selection.
