Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of educational programs using personality strength cards on self-esteem and happiness for middle school students, and to verify the effectiveness of the programs using pre- and post-experimental control group designs. The subjects of the study consisted of 24 students attending U City Girls’ Middle School who expressed their intention to participate in the program. Twelve participants were put in the experimental group and 12 participants were put in the control group. The experimental group participated in a total of 10 character strength cards training program sessions twice a week (90 minutes) for five weeks during the winter vacation period from December 2019 to January 2020. The control group did not receive any training. To analyze the perceptual, self-esteem, and happiness effects of understanding personality strengths, the Jamovi program was used to conduct the Wilcoxon Signaled Ranks test, which is used in small samples, and the results of the study using the analysis of the comments and the analysis of changes in observation were supplemented with qualitative studies. As a result of the study, it was verified that the educational program using the personality strength cards had an effect on the perception of middle school students’ personality strength, and was effective in improving self-esteem and happiness. This study suggested the necessity for the development of research methods and measurement tools to increase the validity of expanded research and the expansion of research by grade and gender, and expanded research that can be used after school.
