Abstract

The article is devoted to the phenomenon of Ukrainian-Polish linguistic and cultural frontier. The basis for the emergence of common cultural phenomena and intercultural dialogue are considered. The article substantiates the peculiarities of the choice of terminology for outlining the concepts of “frontier studies”. Fiction, which is biographically or thematically related to the frontier, often reproduces the existing socio-cultural model of the region, which is characterized by polyphony and dialogue. In one literary text, we come across different cultures that speak in different “voices” but seek to establish a dialogue with each other. The multicultural nature of the frontier requires many factors to be taken into account, including the language aspect. As the interpretive material for modeling linguistic and ethnocultural communications in the context of the dichotomy “friend or foe” as well as a number of other aspects, serve the poetic works of L. Węgliński (c. 1827-1905), who wrote in Polish and Ukrainian. Bilingualism of L. Węgliński acts as a kind of artistic optics that determines the poetics and semantics of his works of art, the formation of his “self” in another’s environment, and non-native language becomes a significant stimulus for his work, a kind of tool. Borrowings and quotations from other languages: French, German, Italian and English in works written in Ukrainian and Polish, testify to the author’s polilingualism, and also confirm that the western lands of Ukraine in the late nineteenth – early twentieth century were a developed European region, the population of which was not limited to one language, but used foreign language vocabulary, usual at the time for Western Ukrainian lands. To the representatives of most peoples, which we meet on the pages of the collections, we can apply the intermediate category of “another”, which indicates the cultural acceptance, a certain interaction and its dialogue in the communicative model of the frontier. In the bilingual works of L. Węgliński we observe not only the peculiarities of the author’s own linguistic consciousness, but also the linguistic and cultural specifics of the Ukrainian-Polish frontier, further study of which will contribute to the deepening of the theoretical foundations of the history of Ukrainian and Polish literary languages.
