Abstract

This article is part of a series of papers on late Roman emperors’ nicknames, which began with the study of unofficial names of Flavius Claudius Julianus. The analysis of informal naming of rulers from the dynasties of Valentinian-Theodosius, Leo and the last augusti of the Western Roman Empire offers insights into how certain aspects of their ruling practices were perceived by various strata of society and makes it possible to trace the metamorphoses of their images in later tradition.
