Abstract

The purpose of the publication – on the basis of the fi rst processed documents of the State Archives of the Chernivtsi Region and rare bindings of the local press, to fi nd out the fate of the old book collections of the main book collections of the Bukovyna region and the regional archive after the new authorities in the 40s–60s of the 20th century revisions and censorship interventions; outline the forms and methods of work of the Communist-Bolshevik authorities in the issue of the use of books and book publishing in the implementation of pre-planned ideological and propaganda actions aimed at «Moscowization» of the mentality of ordinary citizens. Research methodology: such general methodological techniques as analysis, synthesis, generalization, deduction, systematic approach were used. The comparative-historical method made it possible to reveal the common and special things in historical phenomena through the prism of one iconic fi gure, as well as the development trends of the given problem. The novelty of the article is that, in the context of the above-mentioned topic, there are few similar studies in Ukraine. Instead, the central and local archives of the Soviet era contain a signifi cant array of documents, the content of which indicates the origins, goals and methods of Russia’s modern imperial policy towards Ukraine, especially in the humanitarian fi eld. The topic, which now, during the full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, has become particularly relevant. Conclusions. As a result of the study of the topic, a material of signifi cant scientifi c value was collected. The forms and methods of denationalization and de-russifi cation of the population of Western Ukrainian regions, methodically and purposefully implemented by imperial Moscow, had a negative impact on the mentality of ordinary citizens. The systematic destruction of archival collections and the removal from the bookshelves of public libraries of books and periodicals ideologically undesirable to the Communist-Bolshevik regime led to the formation of the phenomenon of a Soviet-minded society.
