Abstract

The paper highlights the main milestones of Petr Yakovlevich Shlaen’s (06.06.1923-25.04.2009) scientific path, who is Doctor of Technical and Doctor of Psychology, a well-known scientist, veteran of the Great Patriotic War, one of the founders of military ergonomics. The article is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of P.Ya. Shlaen’s birth and is based both on students’ and his scientific school successors’ memoirs and impressions, and on fragments from the scientist’s autobiographical book “The Days of My Life”, reflecting the origin and development of domestic military ergonomics. The scientist’s role in organising a number of authoritative structures is shown, such as: the International Academy of Human Factor Problems (IAP HF), the Interregional Ergonomic Association (IEA), the Interregional Branch Centre for Ergonomic Research and Development (Ergocentre), co-organised by the Institute of Psychology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the International Humanitarian Academy “Europe-Asia”, the International Academy of Psychological Sciences (IAPS). P.Ya. Shlaen was the initiator of International and All-Russian scientific conferences, a member of dissertation councils, and a member of the editorial board of a number of scientific journals.
