Abstract

The study aims to identify and describe the content features of linguistic terms reflected “in the mirror” of naive language perception. The study identified groups of terms characterised by high frequency of use in non-linguistic metalanguage contexts; determined the typical semantisation methods for linguistic terms peculiar to the carriers of everyday metalanguage consciousness; described the main content features of the understanding of linguistic terms by naive linguists. The study is novel in that it is the first to examine the functioning of linguistic terms in everyday metalanguage consciousness using the material of crosswords. It is the first time that the basic semantisation methods for terms in crosswords have been identified. The analysis of crossword definitions of terms made it possible to establish differences between scientific and naive views on the semantics and functioning of the terms. Basic semantisation strategies and semantisation methods for terms in crosswords were identified in the course of the study. The paper describes three types of relations between an everyday and a professional reflection on terms: coincidence relations, contradiction relations, deviation relations.
