Abstract

The article considers a thing as a semiotic phenomenon. In this connection, the author tackles the problem of interrelation of functional and symbolic (and more broadly, semiotic) existence of a thing. The study is based on the methodological principle of complementarity. Analysing the interrelation of the functional and the semiotic through the lenses of the mentioned principle, the author concludes that the functional turns out to be included into the semiotic. Special attention is paid to the problem of identifying semiotic characteristics with a view to differentiate the sign functions of a thing from its symbolic manifestations.
