Abstract

The article is devoted to the meaning-forming potential of mono- and polysemantic terms in the English massmedia sphere. Common vocabulary is an inexhaustible resource for the formation and development of special terminology. The professional terminology of massmedia, in its turn, semantically enriches the common language, gives it imagery, enhances its expressive capabilities. In this article, the terminological polysemy of the massmedia is defi ned as the use of the same word-term in two or more senses, or in other words, the presence in the terminological unit of more than one meaning. The polysemantic unit includes those terms which function in one terminological system. In the process of analysis, it was shown that polysemy in general vocabulary leads to the expansion and enrichment of the special terminology. However, in a special fi eld such a phenomenon is not desirable due to clear requirements to the term. Based on the illustrative material, it is concluded that polysemy (as a dynamic functioning of a set of polysemantic components in language activity) should be considered from the standpoint of generalized invariant and its diff erential senses that facilitate mutual understanding of specialists. Thus, the terminological potential of the mono- and polysemantic terms of the English mass media sphere is a powerful internal semantic and functional reserve that aff ects the productivity and evolution of the terminological corpus. In our opinion, one polysemous word-sign correlates in terms of language with only one invariant meaning, and in terms of speech with only one variable meaning. The polysemy of a term is one of its most signifi cant semantic features, which is manifested in various terminology systems, including the mass media sphere, which makes it possible to rationally use the meaning-making potential of the term. Key words: polysemic and monosemic terms, English mass media sphere, common vocabulary, terminological polysemy, creation of senses, generalized function of language and speech, invariant meaning of the term.
