Abstract

Objectives This study aimed to develop and implement an international nursing education and service program to improve global health competency and cultural competency of nursing students, and identify its impact.
Methods In this study, the international nursing education and service program was developed according to the five stages of the ADDIE instructional model. The program was conducted in Mongolia for nursing students from four universities of Korea. This study used a single group pre and post test design. The global health competency and cultural competency of 28 nursing students who participated in the program were measured before and after participating in the program, and statistical significance was compared using the paired t-test.
Results The program developed in this study included five topics, with 12 specific learning objectives based on sub-global health competencies. The program included cultural experience activities, visits to health institutions, and nursing volunteer activities which were linked to the lecture contents as well as lectures. It was identified that the average score of global health competency and cultural competency measured after participating in the pro-gram significantly improved compared to the score measured before the intervention.
Conclusions The results of this study could provide fundamental data to develop an international education pro-gram for improving the global competency of students in other majors. Furthermore, it is expected to contribute to improving nurses’ global health competency and ultimately contribute to addressing global health inequities.
