Abstract

In this paper, we looked into the full text of "The Letter to Tang Shunzhi(唐順之)" and "The Letter to Discuss Literature with Cai Runan(蔡汝南)" by Mao Kun(茅坤) of Ming(明) Dynasty, from which we considered the life and the literary thoughts of Mao Kun(茅坤). Mao Kun suffered from the setback in his official life and was frustrated by the tyranny of the powerful people in the midst of a chaotic political situation in the Ming Dynasty. Although he could not succeed as an official man, but later he could enjoy the scenery of the hometown and create his own poetry to mingle with the literary colleagues. He also was absorbed in collecting books and owned a famous library called Baihualou(白華樓). In addition, the business of his family, silk production, was greatly expanded to make him a wealthy merchant, and the descendants of the family flourished. Mao Kun himself lived to the age of 90 and was praised by many people.
