Abstract
The paper considers the town of Kirensk economic and geographical features of location in different periods. Due to the advantageous geographic location the Kirensky prison, which served as a springboard for the development of the Irkutsk region northern territories, was founded at the intersection of two rivers ‒ Lena and Kirenga. It is given the population dynamics in Kirensks and highlighted the prospects for its development in modern conditions.
