Abstract

The study is devoted to the textual analysis of the essay on Muslim law “Sharkh al-Mafrud”, written by Dagestani theologian Muhammadtahir al-Karahi. The essay is compiled in the traditional genre of legal Muslim works. At the same time, it has a number of peculiarities that gen-erally reflect the characteristic features of Muslim law functioning in the North Caucasus in the 19th century. The study reveals the motives for composing this work, its structure and other specific fea-tures. Particular attention is paid to the topics that worried the minds of Muslims of that period and caused heated discussions in Dagestani intellectual and spiritual elite. Al-Karahi did not stay away from those discussions and his position on certain legal issues is reflected in the book.
