Abstract

Theoretical analysis of the emotional burnout phenomenon has shown that despite its universal structure manifested by three major stages, the psychological factors causing the syndrome are different in various types of the socionomic professions. This paper is aimed at analyzing the nature of professional burnout experienced by the medical personnel and manifested in the form of vocational maladjustment. It has been found that the burnout syndrome is a complicated psychophysiological phenomenon de?ned as emotional, mental and physical exhaustion due to long-lasting emotional burden which can be manifested through depression, the feelings of tiredness and devastation, lack of energy and enthusiasm, the disability of seeing the positive results of one`s own work, the negative attitude towards the patients and life in general. Our empirical data suggest that the emotionally exhausted medical professionals become not only indifferent to the sufferings of their patients but cynical which threatens their own personality integrity. The speci?c aspect of the burnout of these professionals is that young people seem to be prone to burnout even more than the elderly. It can be explained by the dissatisfaction of the young people with their professional status, while the elderly people whose professional occupation prospects are more limited feel more satis?ed with their work and value it. The results of the present research have shown that the introverted respondents are disposed to the emotional burnout to greater extent.
