Abstract
The article outlines the nature and content of contemporary religious education and its place in European pedagogical culture. It defines the understanding of secular education as a socio-pedagogical context of religious education. Based on a comparative analysis, the common features in the European development of religious education are highlighted. Conclusions are formulated which are essential for the pedagogical paradigm of religious education in Bulgaria.
