Abstract

The perception of the Russian character by foreigners can be formed on the basis of fundamental texts of Russian literature and publicism, which are characterised by the comprehension of the Russian character. The aim of the research is to identify the specifics of N. A. Berdyaev’s interpretation of N. V. Gogol’s creative work. Scientific novelty of the research lies in identifying the focus of N. A. Berdyaev’s philosophical interest in the interpretation N. V. Gogol’s texts. The research findings have shown that N. A. Berdyaev’s interpretation of N. V. Gogol’s texts is determined by both a turning point in Russian history and the philosopher’s specific attitude to religion; N. A. Berdyaev’s understanding of the Russian style is based on the comprehension of social and spiritual ailments of the Russian intelligentsia, which the philosopher extends to the entire Russian people.
