Abstract

The purpose of the research is to explore one of the most significant and valuable collections of Mezhyhiria’s faience in Ukraine from the collection of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine (NMHU). The research methodology is based on the paradigm of scientific certainty and comprehensiveness, historical, cultural and artistic approaches, as well as on a number of research methods. In particular, axiological method has been used to identify the significance and value of some exhibits of the NMHU; hermeneutic method has been used to interpret the artistic qualities of artefacts; cross-cultural – to comprehend the relationship of specific works with certain personalities; comparative – to compare monuments with museum’s items from other collections; art history approach has been used to conduct art analysis of Kyiv-Mezhyhiria faience factory’s products from the collection of the NMHU. The scientific novelty of the study is to identify the sources of revenue, the specifics of completing the designated group of products in the mentioned factory according to archival sources, comprehend their value in comparison with similar groups of objects in the largest Ukrainian museum’s collections, and also to draw analogies with the products of other fine-ceramic manufactures in Europe in the 1800s–1870s of the 19th century. Conclusions. The works of the Kyiv-Mezhyhiria faience factory from the collection of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine are of particular value in the context of studying the history of shaping and decorating products of Ukrainian national brands of “white gold”. Through the implementation of comparative studies, it has been able to draw parallels between historically and art significant exhibits by the Kyiv-Mezhyhiria faience factory and well known foreign, primarily by English and Russian trademarks of the faience of the 19th century. Thus, the varieties of the most valuable artistic achievements of the enterprise in the field of decor were visualised, its dating was clarified according to materials on the activities of the factory from the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Kyiv.
