Abstract
The article examines the preferences of Russian university students when choosing 
 a specialty. At the empirical level, the motives for obtaining higher education and students plans for 
 the future were identified, and the reasons for choosing or changing a future specialty were analyzed. Based on the survey results, the authors offer their recommendations to students for choosing the right specialty.
