Abstract

The subject of the research is the peculiarities of Russian-to-English translation of historical terms related to the history of the service class of Russia, such as “nobles”, “service people”, “boyar children” (deti boyarskie). The aim of the research is to develop the principles of approaching a translation solution for these terms in scientific literature on the Russian history of the XVI-XVII centuries. Scientific novelty of the research lies in developing the principles of approaching a translation solution for the terms related to the history of the service class of Russia. This involves a comprehensive study of the context of their existence in the specific period of time described in a translated work; taking into account the professional qualifications of the range of readers (specialists or a wider audience) for whom the translation is intended; the use of term equivalents in cases where it clearly does not cause a distortion of the historical picture of the existence of the term; giving preference to the simultaneous use of transliteration to convey the sound perception of the term and interpretation to convey its content. The research findings are as follows: the reasons for the difficulty in translating historical terms “nobles”, “service people”, “boyar children” have been identified, the translation solutions for these terms have been developed.
