Abstract
The purpose of the article is to do statistical analysis of crimes in Yaroslavl province in the 1870-1890s. The author compares the dynamics of the crime rate and pays special attention to gender, age and territorial aspects. The author also considers the types of crimes, motives for their commission, categories of criminals and measures to combat crime. The author analyzes the influence of various factors over the number and types of crimes, and examines the changes in crime rates during the period under review. A statistical data analysis as well as problem-chronological, comparative-historical, synchronic and general scientific (analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction) methodologies are used in the study. The author examines the data from “Review of Yaroslavl Province [by year]” from 1876 to 1895, calculates the crime dynamics and compares the results with the available data from academic papers. As a result, the author concludes that the statistical data partially refute traditional knowledge on the continuously increasing crime rate in Yaroslavl province in the second half of the 19th century. The academic paper analysis identifies some local features of crime during the period under review: the dynamics do not have sharp rise, and the crime curve reflects increasing and decreasing for 20 years. At the same time, the author notes that Yaroslavl province had the same crime processes as the whole country did. Due to demographic and social characteristics of the Central Russian typical province, the majority of offenses were committed by Russian middle-aged men as in the whole empire. Theft is the leading type of crime throughout the period under study. The research results helps to clarify the available data on crime in Yaroslavl province in the second half of the 19th century, to identify the main types, motives, factors of crime and the characteristics of criminals, to compare the data with those of other Russian provinces. The data analysis provides a better understanding the causes and features of crime in Russia in the post-reform period. The research materials can be used in the development of special courses and special seminars on local history, the history of crime, the public life of Russian society, and the social history of Russia in the second half of the 19th century.
