Abstract

The research objectives are as follows: to reveal causes of structural and organizational reform of the Russian Army in the 1990s and to analyse efficiency of its realization. Scientific originality of the study involves a comprehensive analysis of the strategic deterrence conception in the context of Russia’s national security in the mentioned period. The research findings are as follows: the authors prove that the reform was initially aimed to improve control over the Strategic Forces during dissolution of the Soviet Army, but then the objectives changed, and organizational transformations served the interests of the top military commanders. The reform failed due to political and socio-economic instability of the 1990s.
