Abstract

The authors analyzed Russian and Chuvash words and phraseological units that make up the cluster “clothes” in the Russian and Chuvash linguistic world view in a comparative way. Within the framework of this cluster, the lexical categories “clothing”, “shoes”, “hats”, “accessories”, “jewelry” are considered. The study is carried out on the material of lexicographic and folklore sources. The lexemes that make up the cluster “clothes” are for the first time comprehensively analyzed in a comparative aspect in the context of national and cultural traditions as elements of the cultural code of an ethnic group. In the course of the research, such methods as dictionary definition analysis, distributive analysis, cluster analysis, conceptual analysis, and the comparative method are used. The high informative potential of the names of clothes, shoes, hats, accessories and jewelry in the aspect of national and cultural specificity, the richness of associative-semantic connections, symbolic meanings, a wide range of connotative meanings make this vocabulary an important element of the cultural code of the nation. In the cultural traditions of both peoples, clothing acts as a marker of a person’s belonging to a certain social group, indicates people’s gender, age, marital status, and the level of their material well-being.
