Abstract

The article presents the results of the study of the relations of sociocultural factors with ordinary ideas about illness of people studying Vedic astrology. The online survey included 441 subscribers of the telegram-channel about Vedic astrology, and 184 participants of Internet communities having no direct relation to astrology. The structure of illness myths of people studying Vedic astrology has been identified. The survey has found that the structure of illness myths of people studying Vedic astrology reflects specificity of beliefs peculiar to this community, while the structure of illness myths of people not interested in Vedic astrology align with the beliefs more traditional for the Russian culture. The connection between proneness to irrational beliefs and interest in studying Vedic astrology has been found.
