Abstract

The article is devoted to the so-called “rites controversy” - a long diplomatic, theological and doctrinal conflict between imperial China and the Vatican. The author makes an attempt to approach the history of the conflict in the historical perspective: after all, a similar conflict in the Sino-Vatican relations can still be observed today. It is noted that although “the rites controversy”, after centuries of unceasing scandals, found its peaceful solution, the root of the conflict has not been squandered so far, and its nature is in the incompatibility of a number of cultural paradigms typical of both the Chinese civilization and the western Christianity.
