Abstract

The nomadic peoples of the Ural North have left very few material traces of their stay. However, a wealth of information has been preserved in cartographic sources, including toponymy. The article shows the dynamics of the development and exploring of the Pripechorye region by different peoples, using the example of the Shchugor River, the Pechora tributary. A brief overview of hybrid toponyms is given: Nenets-Mansi, Komi-Mansi, containing valuable information about the history of the development of this area. The general characteristics of the area — geographical, historical, ethnographic — are presented. Studies of the historical and cultural heritage of the region are largely based on cartographic sources. The history of research and development of the Pripechorye region, reflected in the maps, is considered on the example of the Shchugor River: the appearance of the river and its tributaries on the main European and Russian maps, the transformation of their names. Special attention is paid to the «trans-stone» path through the Urals along Shchugor. The material is illustrated with 12 drawings, including 9 maps.
