Abstract

This paper examines the metaphorical expressions for ‘house prices’ in Korean newspaper editorials from the viewpoint of the conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff and Johnson 2003) and the ideas of surface and deep frames (Lakoff 2006). More specifically, this study analyzes the types of conceptual metaphors, which function as surface frames, reflected in metaphorical expressions, and then it deduces the kinds of deep frames activated by the surface frames. The analysis shows that the system of conceptual metaphors for house prices is based on bodily experience. Finally, this research concludes that there are eight deep frames which seem to activate another two mutually exclusive deep frames and the one common deep frame regarding house prices.
