Abstract
The article analyzes Yury Trifonov’s collection of short stories Igry v sumerkakh (Games at Twilight), which was published in 1970 by the publishing house Fizkultura i Sport (Physical Culture and Sports). The book consists of sports stories that the author composed in the period from 1956 to 1968. During this time span Trifonov gradually expands the frame of the sports story. Starting with a nostalgic narrative about children admiring sports idols, the writer establishes a connection between sports and memories of the days of youth. Later, Trifonov begins to record the tragic changes in the perception of sports by the masses and progressively switches to a narrative about historical memory and trauma. Thus, although the sports story was not a genre of high literary standing, it emerged as a convenient form for the development of Trifonov’s historical point of view, which later affected his Moscow cycle stories.
