Abstract
On December 4, 1990 a regional subdivision of the Russian Academy of Sciences was established in Vologda. In the tough time of radical economic reforms of the early 90s, the Academy of Sciences managed to assess the potential for the establishment of an academic center in one of the industrially developed regions of Russia. This fact indicates the interest of RAS in the development of science in the country and in the regions. The article reflects the role of outstanding scientists, academicians and corresponding members of RAS in establishing scientific schools on socio-economic development problems of regions, shows their systemic participation in the formation of the main study areas of Vologda Research Center of RAS.
