Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a smart media-based coaching program for improving smartphone overdependence and to verify its effectiveness. The coaching program used in this study was developed through literature review, consulting with a specialist, and a feasibility study. The program consisted of mindfulness coaching using virtual reality (VR), wellness coaching using smart bands, and psychological and life coaching for improving smartphone overdependence. The coaching also applied the GROW conversation model by default. The study subjects were adults in the smartphone overdependence risk group of Korean nationality residing in South Korea. 80 participants were recruited through online communities and SNS, where adults are the main users, 40 participants were finally selected. In both the post-test and follow-up tests, the coaching program demonstrated statistically significant changes in loss of control and salience, two sub-factors of smartphone overdependence, in the experimental group when compared to the control group. However, another sub-factor, problematic consequences, was not statistically significant in both the post-mortem and follow-up tests. Therefore, in future research, it is necessary to revise and supplement the program contents to improve problematic consequences, and to apply additional measures for detailed analysis of the problematic consequences (psychological, physical, and social impact) by subject and situation. This study contributes academically as the first study on a smart media-based coaching program for the improvement of smartphone overdependence and can be used as basic data for related research and program development.
