Abstract
Background and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop the pandemic situational vocabulary and graphic symbols needed in AAC(Augmentative and Alternative Communication) systems for people with developmental disabilities and validate them. Methods: FGI(Focus Group Interview) was conducted with families of people with developmental disabilities, professionals working with people with developmental disabilities, speech-language pathologists, and special education teachers to explore the need for developing AAC vocabulary and graphic symbols. A vocabulary list was developed through content analysis, and graphic symbols were developed. The vocabulary and graphic symbols were evaluated for validity by 20 family members, speech-language pathologists, special educators of people with developmental disabilities, and 10 people with developmental disabilities. Results: The FGI results indicated a need to develop vocabulary and graphic symbols for infectious disease prevention, participation in telepractice activities and self-care, as well as home, time, date, weather, work life, and emotional expression. Design guidelines for graphic symbols were developed, graphic symbols were developed through a council of illustrators, and some vocabulary for movement and motion was developed as graphics interchange format (GIF) symbols. The suitability of the developed graphic symbols was validated. Conclusion: The development of AAC graphic symbols representing infection-specific prevention, telepractice activities, and social networking is expected to be very useful in the pandemic era.
