Abstract

It's true that the industrial design, which emerged in the 20th century, has attached importance to function-oriented understanding and development; just the physical function of a product has been respected, but immaterial function belonging to a metaphorical character of a thing ended up being ignored. However, with Post-modern philosophy beginning to have an influence on post-industrial society on the basis of the 1960s, the research on the existence and value of the product language from the multi-dimensional perspective could be set off. Particularly, the existence of the product language was proved by Jan Mukarovsky through his discovery of symbolism having the same meaning of a language in the 1970s. However, the true nature of metaphorical contents inhering in a thing began with Romantic painting in the 18th century. The intangible value, which is linked to a pleasure to discover a realist ego through the immaterial formal language beyond a human's cognitive limit, is the very sublimity. The concent of sublimity was used in order to prove superiority of the US capitalism & democracy in the 1930s, and the concept has been actively applied to Post-modernism ,which resisted functionalism in 1980, and to the architectural field even today, in the 21st century. This study defined the identity of sublimity at the philosophy and art history level, and actually considered the US streamlined design, Post-modernism, minimalism, and architectural field. In addition, this study intended to verify what types of sublime value & contents are reflected in individual design areas, or what are the contents. Hereupon, this study is aimed at confirming the product-languaged-based true nature of sublimity, which has not been raised up until the present in the industrial design area.
