Abstract

The paper considers representation of buffoonery theatre genres in L. N. Tolstoy’s artistic and aesthetic search. The article describes development of street performance, festival tradition, buffoonery in the second half of the XIX century, reveals specificity of their influence on the writer’s creative work. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the researcher provides a comprehensive analysis of the problem, examines periodicals of that time, archival materials, refers to special literature on the history of theatre. The research findings are as follows: the author identifies objective causes of decay of this sphere of culture, shows that Tolstoy’s polemics was focused just on these issues, systematizes the writer’s notes on the problem.
