Abstract

Objectives According to Carol Dweck(2006), our mindset is the collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape our thoughts or habits. The purpose of this study was to investigate the grit and self-control in the relationship between mindset and task engagement among college dance students.
Methods A questionnaire comprised of the mindset scale, grit scale, self-control scale, and task engagement scale was administrated to 485 male and female students (mean age 20.52). Correlation analyses, simple mediation analyses, and moderated mediation analyses for testing the hypothesis using PROCESS macro were performed.
Results We found that grit positively mediated the relationship between growth mindset and task engagement, whereas that grit negatively mediated the relationship between fixed mindset and task engagement. The influence of grit on the relationship between mindsets and task engagement was moderated by self-control.
Conclusions The results indicated that grit and self-control were key factors for facilitating college dancers’ task engagement.
