Abstract

Volunteering activity of the library and information science organizations as a key social institution in the culture formation our country is analyzed. The author’s definition of the library and information science organizations is presented. Information about the volunteer activities of the library and information science organizations located in 11 districts of St. Petersburg was identified and systematized. A sociological survey aimed at identifying the best volunteering practices in the library and information science (LIS) field was developed and evaluated. The directions and formats of volunteering are considered, as well as the activities of LIS organizations’ project activity in which volunteers from various fields are invited to participate (including LIS field). Particular attention is paid to the consideration of volunteer associations operating based on the LIS organizations. In particular, the experience of the volunteer union “Postmen of Good” based on St. Petersburg State University of Culture was considered. Recommended actions for the development institute of volunteering are based on the results of the study.
