Abstract
The article analyses the way common gender nouns are used in modern Spanish. It examines and suggests reasons for the two basic tendencies in the modification of the nouns under research within the situation of linguistic feminization (which has become rather widespread in the last decade). The second part of the article describes the main events in the Spanish-speaking world which have caused the eradication of sex discrimination in the modern Spanish language of official authorities, mass media and educational institutions.
